Scaphoid fractures classically present after patients FOOSH (Fall On OutStretched Hand) with swelling and tenderness of the anatomical snuff box. Plain radiographs can miss up to 14% of these fractures soon after injury. The risk of Avascular Necrosis (AVN) and variability in heeling time may be accounted for with its arterial blood flow (retrograde from distal to proximal; the proximal pole being at greatest risk). Treat with Thumb Spica cast, repeat films within 2 weeks, have a chat with Ortho. Reference: Marx JA, Hockberger RS, Walls RM, et al., eds. Rosen's Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice. Philadelphia, PA: Mosby/Elsevier; 2010.
